| things i am going to do before i die (a list in no particular order) |
[Sep. 1st, 2009|02:37 pm] |
1. perform duets of the following at kareoke: iggy pop and kate pearson - candy, bill medley and jennifer warnes - (i've had) the time of my life 2. call a taxi to pick up an order of pizzas and share a slice with the driver on the way home. alternately, go through a drive through in a taxi and buy the driver a sundae 3. live in a house with an old ratty couch on the verandah. play guitar on that verandah in the rain 4. bake a tiered cake with fancy crap on it 5. screen a film festival in my backyard or pool, possibly using a sheet as a screen and a borrowed projector of some sort. 6. perform the robot dance to rapturous (or at least better than polite) applause 7. hang-glide, but not to anywhere in particular 8. write a novel/novella/short story based on this idea i've got 9. play club cricket. alternately, try out for club cricket and not be selected for the team (realism!) 10. perform on stage with a band . get paid to perform on stage with a band
this is a work in progress

oh god, i've woken up in the middle of the night and not been able to sleep for a few hours now. suddenly, a chilling thought struck me. did i feel feverish? i had made several trips over the evening to get water, and my brow certainly felt a bit warm, so i went to grab a thermometer and it turns out, yes, i have a fever of 38.5 degrees. i'm currently getting a second opinion before the panadol kicks in...
yes i do have a fever apparently, so now i have to try to write as much stuff for pelican as i can while i'm still able to, in case i wind up getting much worse before i get better. edition goes to print tuesday. |

[Jan. 27th, 2009|08:40 pm] |
today was another day in the office working on Pelican. i'm pretty excited with how the edition seems to be coming together. tomorrow i'm planning the page layout which will reveal any gaping content holes and then i'll know for sure exactly how unfounded my current optimism is. hopefully i'll also finish the cover art, which is proceeding very nicely at the moment and is probably 2 hours away from being finished, barring me changing my mind about what it should look like.
in addition to rebooting this lj, i've also started a new blog, inspired by caro and magda's efforts, where i try to record my creative endeavours. i've just found what looks like a good site to host streaming mp3s, and once i get my SM57 microphone back off chris, i'll be able to start uploading bits and pieces of the music i make. at the moment though there is just the first half of my making the pelican cover process, which is basically texta drawings of ghosts. hopefully it will look more impressive when the second half is done. oh yeah, the address is iotamax.blogspot.com, if you are interested.
to get myself ready for playing more guitar this year, i took all the pedals off my pedalboard, vacuumed it, and reconnected everything. i used all of my good hosa pedal leads, which seems to have returned a bit of clarity to my guitar signal (i've never been sure how much i believe in good leads, but maybe there is something to it?) i've made room on my board for a few more pedals, at the moment i want another overdrive (possibly a toadworks lil' leo) and i'm thinking also a bbe mind bender, which is a chorus/vibrato. then when i get my memory man fixed i will get a seperate pedalboard for that, my looper, and an electro-harmonix voice box (vocal harmony generator). then i will stop wasting my money on little circuits in coloured boxes. |

| some fascinating tidbits |
[Jan. 22nd, 2009|09:44 pm] |
i gave my hair a really good wash today because my scalp has been itchy and it actually made a huge difference. today it wasn't itchy at all, plus my hair is all nice and staying in neatish curls with less frizz. since i wash my hair everyday i was surprised how much of a difference being really thorough and conditioning made. also i shampooed twice, with different shampoos. now i have to experiment to figure out how often i need to double shampoo and condition like i did today to maintain the best effect.
the other thing i did today that was pleasing was try to play some old weezer songs, particularly say it ain't so, which i found really tricky last time i'd tried to learn it. this time i found that it came to me much more easily, which isn't really surprising, since it's been a year and i'd thought my guitar playing had seemed to be improving, but it's still nice to have proof.
and then there was the last thing i did today, which was work on pelican. i was supposed to be trying to finish the cover design, but me being me i didn't really get around to it, although i have assembled all the various markers and pencils etc that i need, plus the fonts and photoshop tutorials. tomorrow, then, my goal is to at least do the drawing for the cover, and start putting together some design elements for the inside of the edition, like choosing some other fonts |

Stuff has actually sort of happened this week, so here goes:
V for Vendetta: Thankyou kaleidoskopeyes very much for bringing me along, and sorry I was late, just like I always am for everything ever. As for the movie, it was good and I will certainly be seeing it at least once more because it seems to demand multiple viewings
Eating food: I ate a large Crispy Chicken BLT combo which I then chased with a large McChicken combo for lunch yesterday, and I still can feel it in my stomach. Imagine swallowing a bowling ball and that would give you some idea of how I feel at the moment
Optigan: I'm engaged in a bidding war on ebay for an Optigan in Victoria, which if I win will give me the ultimate musical weapon. Organising to get something that weighs 40 kilos freighted is very tricky however, and then once I get it I will probably have to dismantle it and rebuild it as a keyboard and then have the amp and speakers seperate.

| It'S a VERY GEMMA BIRTHDAY |
[Mar. 21st, 2006|12:40 am] |
we went to Han's Cafe. I had pepper squid which was a long long time coming but quite tasty and some of Ian's white wine (represent brother). there is probably only one person i really hate and she was there, so that wasn't really all that fun but i strenuously avoided her and that seemed to go ok. after food we went to kareoke which was fun. me and megan did a touching duet of close to you, and no less than one song later i showed my full range of a vocalist, going from cheesy vegas lounge singer to gangsta rap by doing gold digger by kanye west. i also later sang american pie and whiter shade of pale in larger groups, but still with spectacular skillzzzzzzz
it's late and i'm topo druink and tired to find one of my usual pictures for this so sorry just imageine something from the internet in this space here.....
end of imaginary picture, insert commentsd |

Well, I've decided I'm going to try and keep this vaguely up to date now, so stay tuned for more banality or failing that my own singular brand of cutting edge humour.
I've noticed I'm falling way short on my angst quota for my LJ, so here goes: Yesterday I forgot my wallet, phone and pens when I went to uni. Upshot was no food, having to park in free bays 15 minutes off campus and well, having no pens didn't matter because I have a laptop.
Today on the other hand kicked arse and took names. I got my cowboy animation stuff from uni, had a lovely lunch with Claire, and got the post satchels so I can start selling some guitar crap on ebay. Oh, and in answer to the big question, I got a new Greg Keyes book today, and finished it already!

[Mar. 12th, 2006|09:38 pm] |
I've always been all about asking the hard questions, so here goes:
Where are my copies of Chutes Too Narrow and in/Casino/OUT?
When on earth is Greg Keyes going to finish his next book? For that matter, when is Tad Williams going to finish his next book?
Why do I look so much fatter on some days than others? If I dieted would that make me thin enough all of the time or would I wind up thin enough on my "fat" days and be skeletony the rest of the time? Is it possible for me to even diet anyway, given that for me a day without icecream is like a day without delicious creamy oxygen? Is it good grammar to have a question mark there?
Why are there so many people who apparently look like me? I just found out about another one
What's the deal with Americans calling denim jackets jean jackets? For serious. I mean, that's basically like calling a suit jacket a pants jacket, since jeans are actually a type of pants. I wish there were more types of denim thing, so I could further illustrate my point by talking about jean shoes and jean unmbrellas and so forth.
How long does it take two men to dig half a hole?
That last one was a trick question, I already know the answer and it is half as long as one man (not that hard when you think it through logically and don't let emotion cloud your thinking, assuming you get emotional about digging holes. Hopefully you don't, that would be wierd)
Sorry that last one wasn't a question. It doesn't look like this one will be either, but wait... Do you forgive me? (oh snap)
WHERE DID ALL THESE CHICKENS COME FROM OH GOD

I thought this was pretty funny, and I bet disasterplan will be interested, brit-pop junkie that he is.
Passion of the British New Wave
The BBC plans to mark the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ this Easter with an hour-long live procession through the streets of Manchester featuring pop stars from The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays and featuring songs by The Smiths and New Order.
In the programme, called Manchester Passion, a character representing Jesus will sing the legendary Joy Division anthem Love Will Tear Us Apart before dueting his arch-betrayer Judas on the New Order hit Blue Monday, according to senior church sources involved in the production.
Full Story is here: http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,,1695198,00.html
This totally sounds like the best idea ever. I can't wait to hear Jesus sing I am the Resurrection when he comes back to life
In completely unrelated words, I'm watching Joe Average on Channel 7, and the girl was watching the guys in a bar while disguised as a cocktail waitress, and she's getting all upset that the guys were flirting with other girls, like they were cheating on her and not just contestants or a reality show. She's actually crying about it now. I wish I'd seen more of this show |

This idea shamelessly stolen from disasterplan. imitation; flatterery, blah blah blah
Celebrity Valentine number 1:
Zooey Deschanel Why? She was in Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and moreover, wore argyle socks within said movie She plays the ukelele and piano in a band called If All the Stars Were Pretty Babies
Celebrity Valentine number 2:
Carrie Brownstein Why? Although my johnny-come-lately status is rather embarassing, I hella like Sleater-Kinney, the band in which Carrie rocks the socks (not argyle sadly) Guitars = teh cool. SG = teh coolest
Celebrity Valentine number 3:
Rachel McAdams Why? SO ... PRETTY |

Stocktake is over! It's been a rough ride for the last few months, with one retail disaster after another. Christmas, stocktake sale and stocktake have all passed, and I can finally relax and spend time with my loved ones. By which I mean my new amp.
NEW AMP: It's a Vox AC30CC, which is basically a reissue of the classic AC30 that pretty much every cool band ever has used. It even has a top boost channel! It's big and heavy, but it's also stupidly loud, and sounds really good, even at bedroom volumes. I've borrowed a few guitars, so I've been messing around with my Les Paul copy, plus a Strat and a Les Paul Junior I borrowed (the LP is a real Gibson too!) At the moment, everything is sounding rather Franz Ferdinandesque, which doesn't bother me one bit.
Coming soon! Pictures of guitars and amps!
Why is bacon trying to hurt me? We've always been friends and now it is flicking salty grease in my eyes and sticking in my throat and probably clogging my arteries too |

Well friends, most of you live far from me or don't know/haven't met/barely know me, but I still thought I'd let you in on a very special Boxing Day tradition of mine: the consumption of epic fantasy! Because there isn't any LOTR this year, I'm adding a gingerbread house to the line up, to be eaten at my house before the screening. After we eat the house it's one to see Narnia, with tickets I will book in advance on the internet.

You are welcome to come to either or both of the events. If you want to skip the gingerbread house eating, you can meet us at Innaloo or whatevs. If you only want eat gingerbread, come to my house.I haven't got the times worked out yet, but comment if you want to be kept up to date on the info. |

Today is all about box kites.
Although box kites are definetely a kite, they aren't really a box. They don't have enough sides, and they aren't cardboard most of the time, which I associate with boxes.
A box kite could be made quite easily with dowel and strings and paper or fabric or kite sheets, which are sheets of whatever kites are made of (probably either paper or fabric, but I don't know which). For a more traditional box kite, the string should have lots of triangles of coloured paper attached to it, although some say this is an unfair kite stereotype.
A Simpsons episode once told me that box kites were invented as a way of drying string, but I can almost guarantee that this is not true. I think box kites were invented so that even box shaped things can taste the exhilaration and freedom of flight, which would otherwise be denied them.
A person could never ride a box kite, even if it was really really big (the kite, not the person). It just wouldn't work for so many reasons.
Box kites can be used to teach children many lessons, from the tragedy of urbanisation, which robs us of kite space, to the fickleness of the weather, seen through the ebb and flow of wind, the force which gives kites life.
A box kite looks like this:

OOPS, THIS IS NO BOX OF MINE

Poor farmyard friend, I warned you to stay away from the box kite machine. Let your spirit soar to heaven, the clouds are your paddocks now.

[Nov. 27th, 2005|10:53 pm] |
Today, this entry is about yams.
Yams are a vegetable or a fruit.
You can buy cans of yams, which seems odd. Can you imagine potato in a can? I sure can't, but maybe you have a better imagination than me. Would it be peeled or not? Maybe you could choose.
They come from Africa and are eaten by people. There might be some relationship between yams and Thanksgiving, but I don't know, and seriously am writing this article completely off the top of my head. To be honest, I know very little about yams, and yet am surprised by what I do know
I think they are like a sweet potato, not in flavour, but I mean the actual "sweet potato" is a vegetable they resemble.
Technically they are a root or tuber.
You can make sweet potato pie, so I suppose the same thing would work with yams, but I can't back that up 100% percent.
I've never tasted a yam, or seen one in real life, but I picture them as being kind of orange inside.
If I was selecting my favourite vegetable based on how fun it's name is to say, I would probably choose yams, or maybe papaya, although that is really a fruit.
Here is a yam (actually there is three yams):

They might look serious, but they have a fun-loving side too:

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE A YAM, THEY ARE FIERCE AND WILY FOES:

Can you believe it is just shy of a month since I updated? What have I done in all that time? Everything and nothing. Nothing has happened, except for a whole pile of crazy crap, especially this, my exam week. Well, I'm one day away from exams being over, and have decided relentless positivity is the key. (key to tha MAXXXX)
Important upcoming Spiderman information!!!!!!
I'm sure this has been noticed by a few people, but rumours are already flying about what villains will be in Spiderman 3. Answers? Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace are the ones playing the parts, but which parts? Answer? (cut for spoilers) ( Read more... )
Topher Grace: well, no-one knows, but rumours are flying that he'll either be playing Electro or Venom.
Here is an artists impression of what Topher might look like as Electro, that delightfully turquoise clad chap:
 Topher as Venom:

My money is on Venom, what with Mary Jane's astronaut fiance John Jameson being introducted to the picture. Theory: Finds symbiote on moon or similar, it escapes from being studied and Eddie Brock finds it. Also, Topher has died his hair blonde. Blonde as Eddie Brock? PERHAPS!!!

Oh yeah, and there is supposed to be three villains in the movie, the third one will probably be Harry as either the Hobgoblin or Green Goblin 2, which ever they choose. |
